Education for Rural Youth

Rural communities within the Chach region of Pakistan face a number of barriers that inhibit their access to quality education, such as:

  • poverty and the inability to afford tuition and books, electronics, and needed supplies,

  • poor educational standards that reduce the quality and consistency of what is taught in schools,

  • shortage of qualified teachers and ongoing support for teachers,

  • lack of accessible, local higher education institutions, and

  • the prohibitive cost of transportation services to access regional higher education institutions.

The A G Khan Foundation aims to alleviate poverty and empower rural Pakistani communities via supporting their access to quality education. Specifically, the Foundation will:

  • provide free education including text books, school supplies, uniforms, scholarships, prizes etc. to poverty-ridden children,

  • provide financial aid for technical and higher education to students based  on academic merit as well as financial need,

  • assist existing schools of all grade levels towards improving their educational standards,

  • help establish Science and Technology programs for children in rural schools by developing Science/Computer labs and providing lab equipment and other necessary resources,

  • improve access to regional higher education programs by providing and/or funding transportation services,

  • implement adult literacy programs, and

  • establish community centers at the village/town level for literacy/vocational programs with libraries, tutoring centers and other basic facilities for adults as well as the youth.
