Healthcare for Rural Communities

The A G Khan Foundation aims to provide basic healthcare through building village/town level health clinics and partnering with local healthcare professionals to provide direct services.

The A G Khan Foundation’s first funded facility is the A G Khan Memorial Hospital, located within the village of Barazai, Pakistan. The facility construction began September 2020, and the hospital was formally launched as a site for medical services in January 2022. This is the village’s first medical facility and has reduced the need for transportation to neighboring towns and cities for access to timely and basic healthcare services.

The A G Khan Memorial Hospital is a facility that currently consists of 3 exam rooms, 2 waiting rooms, a pharmacy, a laboratory, and a parking lot for patients. There is a plan to later expand the facility with additional office spaces, a conference room, and overnight housing for medical providers, as well as additional exam rooms for patients.

The A G Khan Foundation has partnered with local medical practitioners to provide direct care to patients in Barazai and neighboring communities. Currently a number of services are provided, including COVID-19 screening. The Foundation will support a medical team that eventually includes:

  • A General Practitioner to provide treatment for minor issues and during emergencies,

  • A Gynecologist to evaluate and treat pregnant women, provide prenatal care, provide healthcare education about preventative and hygienic care, perform Cesarean-sections as needed, and provide post-delivery monitoring and treatment,

  • A Pediatrician to provide preventative vaccinations and treatment to children,

  • A Dentist to provide dental hygiene care, and

  • An Optometrist to provide ongoing vision screenings and care.

In the future, the Foundation plans to partner with organizations in other villages/towns to develop medical clinics and healthcare services in those areas.
